Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept - 2012 Detroit Auto Show

Volvo has released pictures and details their latest green concept Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept which will be unveiled at the upcoming 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept is a high performance electric car, which will be built to allow the driver decide how the car will be powered for a drive using of the one of the three buttons for the different power modes available, with the option of driving either in Pure mode (powered solely by its electric motor), hybrid mode (powered by a combination of gasoline engine and electric motor) or Power mode (with the maximum power possible from the combination of the gasoline engine and electric motor).

The XC60 Hybrid is a petrol-engined hybrid, unlike the diesel-engined V60 plug-in hybrid, The engine is a 2766bhp four cylinder turbo engine which powers the front wheel, according to the officials at Volvo "Four-cylinder engines are the most effective way to quickly reduce CO2 emissions and fuel consumption without compromising customer expectations when it comes to driving pleasure and performance”. The electric motor powers the rear wheels with an additional 69bhp.

In Pure mode with the electric motor, the car can be driving up to 35 miles according to the U.S certification driving cycle and 45km according to the European certification driving cycle. In hybrid mode which is the default setting when the car is started, the car goes up to 600 miles (960 km) with CO2 emission of 53g/km and fuel economy of about 100mpg.

In terms of design, the exterior will be finished in white with 21 each wheels, the interior is designed with dark blue leather upholstery and inlays of blue-grey wood. The car has been equipped with several equipments that will ensure the driver is continuously updated with the gas and electricity consumption and battery level. It also features the Volvo Sensus infotainment system that informs the driver about charging stations and the best route for as little energy consumption as possible.

According to the President and CEO of Volvo Car Corporation Stefan Jacoby "The technology in the XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept is as ingenious as it is unique, you can make really green progress on the road without compromising on any of the luxury car's renowned properties. No other manufacturer has succeeded in delivering fuel economy and electrical range on this level in a capable, spacious performance car with 350 horsepower on tap".
