Volkswagen E-Up! Production Version to be launched in 2013

Created Date: 30/01/2012

Volkswagen has confirmed the launch of the production version of the Volkswagen E-Up will be in 2013. The Volkswagen E-Up! Concept was first unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor. A near production version of the zero-emission vehicle was revealed at the IAAA in 2011.

The E-Up! powered by an electric motor is able to deliver a peak of 81 PS (54 PS constant) and 154 lbs ft of torque channeling drive through the front wheels. It can accelerate to 62mph in 11.3 seconds before a top speed of 84mph is reached. The lithium-ion batteries powering the vehicle has a capacity of 18kWh, allowing a speculative driving range of over 80 miles (about 130kilometers). The battery requires a charging time of about five hours using a 230-volt domestic system; the charging process is assisted by a series of 1.4 square metres solar panels mounted on the roof.

The new Volkswagen E-Up! is 3,199 mm in length and weighs just 1,085kg. In spite of the miniature dimensions, the car is quite spacious on the inside and is able to carry 3 adults and a child. To cut down the demand on the vehicle’s batteries, simple mechanisms such as the mirror adjustments and windows are manually operated; it also has a touch screen system that provides the driver with information like the amount of charge remaining on the battery and the closest charging stations.

The E-Up! Seems to have a lot going for it, from the zero emission feature, the light weight lithium battery that charges in about 5 hours to the driving distance of 130kilometers .It will make a great addition to the Volkswagen Up family.
