The new Mazda 3 will be the third release in Mazda’s new generation of products. It follows the trend of adopting the KODO-Soul of Motion design theme and also the incorporation of the full suite of SKYACTIV Technologies. Part of the SKYACTIV technology is the experience of jinba-ittai. Jinba-ittai is a Japanese phrase for the unity of horse and rider. The term is particularly pertinent when it is used to describe Yabusame, or Japanese mounted archery to me and you, which requires incredible levels of control and concentration. This is brought about by the introduction of a new Human Machine Interface (HMI) which focuses on safety as a priority. This also includes an improved connectivity system which can utilise smart phones to provide internet and communication functions. The new design incorporates Mazda’s i-ACTIVSENSE advanced active safety technology which assists the driver in recognising and reacting to warnings and hazards. Much like the technology we covered in our review of the new Mercedes S Class. The Mazda 3 uses milliwave radars and cameras to help the driver notice hazards and potential accidents before they happen and to also minimize damage once an accident occurs. Some of the implementations of this technology include the High Beam Control system which automatically switches the vehicle between high and low beam. There are also other features such as the Blind Spot Monitoring System, Lane Departure Warning System, Forward Obstruction Warning, Smart Brake and Smart City Brake Support and also Mazda Radar Cruise Control which all aim to ensure the car keeps sufficient distance from other vehicles and also alert the driver when possible problems arise.

Mazda 3 Exterior

Even if you are not a Japanese horse archer you will probably appreciate Mazda’s latest creation. The exterior design presents a car which looks like the younger, cooler and slightly meaner brother of the Audi A3 (which is not a bad thing in our opinion.) The flowing, horizontal lines that stretch from the headlights to the rear wheel arch emphasise the designers focus on motion and speed. This is further reinforced by the set back position of the cars cabin. On high-grade models the cars head and taillights will include wing shaped illuminations which we think is a nice little touch. Wheels will be available in either 18-inch or 16-inch aluminium sets or a 16-inch steel wheel set with full wheel caps. Upon its release it will be available in 7 different colours. These include two new ones; Titanium Flash Mica and Deep Crystal Blue Mica. The new Active Driving Display utilises a clear panel that sits vertically behind the instrument cluster and displays vehicle speed, navigation system information and other details. The instrument cluster itself utilises a centrally located analogue gauge and two smaller wing-shaped digital displays on either side. A nice touch is the fact that a red ring around the centre gauge pulsates once the driver opens the door. Further to this, upon ignition the Active Driving Display rises into position. The gear stick is finished in leather and satin-chrome plating. The satin chrome trim is extended to the centre console and combined with a piano black finish. Seats come in a lightweight design with sculpted backs to provide more knee clearance for passengers. The interior will be available in off-white or black leather and two different types of fabric which will come in black or sand.

Mazda 3 Engine Size

The car is available in many different models all utilising the latest in SKYACTIV powertrain technology. The petrol models come in 1.5L, 2.0L and 2.5L variants and there is also a diesel offering with a 2.2L engine. Maximum power on the 1.5L model sits at 86kW with a maximum torque of 150Nm whereas the 2.0L model has a comfortable max power of 116Kws and a maximum torque of 203Nm. The 2.5L model carries an impressive max power of 137Kw and a maximum torque of 251Nm. However, the 2.2L diesel engine is the most impressive, for its size, with a max power of 110kW and a max torque of a whopping 380Nm.  In select markets the car also comes fitted with Mazda “i-stop” as standard which contributes to the cars overall fuel economy. Mazda’s i-ELOOP brake energy regeneration system is another great addition. It uses a capacitor to store electricity, that is generated when the car decelerates, for later use. This increases fuel economy by reducing the amount of electricity that needs to be generated by the engine. The car also comes fitted with a SKYACTIV-BODY system that increases rigidity by 30% in comparison to the previous model and allows for a reduction in body deformation during cornering. In addition to this, use of lightweight materials has resulted in a reduction in weight of 90kg. Pricing is still being kept under wraps and can be expected to be announced nearer to its Autumn release date when the car will see a global launch.
